Tom has nearly 20 years experience in Intellectual Property and currently works in all areas of patent, Trademark & designs law including due diligence, Patent searching, drafting and Intellectual Property legal opinion work.
Tom has had previous experience at IPONZ, the New Zealand Patent Office, both as a Senior Patent & Designs Examiner and as a Trademarks Team Leader. During his tenure at IPONZ Tom also played a leading role in advising on the drafting of the New Trademarks Act .
Along with Tom’s substantial New Zealand IP experience Tom has also had also worked in Australia in PIPERS Brisbane Office and has successfully litigated, on behalf of a local company, a Trademark opposition against FINAXA through the Australian IP office’s disputes procedure.
Tom’s technical expertise lies in the agricultural, viticultural, mechanical and electrical fields and he is recognized amongst his colleagues and client’s for his skills in assisting to formulate robust Trademark and branding strategies.
Tom advises a diverse range of clients in such matters as patent protection, trademarks & branding, copyright, trade secrets, technology transfer & licensing issues, infringement disputes, and foreign intellectual property issues.
Tom is also vastly experienced in all aspects of Trade Marks and is one of PIPERS leading personnel in this area.
Tom is a member of the NZIPA, IPSANZ, APAA & BNI and is pleased to be part of the IPONZ Patent and Trademark Technical Focus Groups that considers and provides advice on Patent and Trade mark policy and practice.
